Get unstable to get stable (and help you core at the same time!)

Buzz words in todays sports performance information world include "core", "stability", "balance", etc. Athletes are in constant motion---moving forwards, backwards and vertical in an attempt to perform athletic actions.

The key is being able to perform an athletic action while in the funkiest position such as catching a ball thats coming to you from an awkward angle or trying to defend an opponent who just gave you a head fake. If your core is strong, the funky postions won't matter as you will still feel like your in balance while performing these athletic actions.

Use the two training drills above to put you in awkward angles with weighted resistance. In both instances you will be performing a lunge while rotating your torso over the forward leg with weight. As you do this stay as tall as possible with your torso. Once completed push back up to your original position.

Try these tips:
  • First try drill without any weight (just your own body)
  • Drills can also be performed with med balls
  • Drills can be performed in place or while lunging forward or even backwards for several steps

Go with about 3 sets of about 8 reps per leg. Good luck!
